Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

Q and A with Helene LeBlanc

Helene LeBlancWhat is your favourite hobby or pastime?

When I have time, running. I`m an avid runner.

What historical figure you most identity with?

The author of Dead Men Do Tell Tales, William R. Maples. He may not be much of an historical figure, but he worked very hard and took many odd jobs in order to achieve his goals. I can relate with that.

Which living person do you most admire?

In my academic life; my mentor and friend, Gail Anderson. In my personal life; my mother.

Where do you like to vacation or spend your free time?

Back home in New Brunswick. It is a beautiful place… in the summer.

What do you consider to be your greatest achievement?

Other than my children, my vast international experience in the field of forensic entomology.

What is your favourite movie?

Men in Black! My husband hates it, but he kindly bought me all three movies (two sequels) last year.

What book are you reading at the moment?

Stalled: Jump-starting the Canadian Economy, by Michael Hlinka. I`m all over the place with books. I normally prefer fiction, but I`m open to just about anything.
